This horrible massacre of whales and dolphins article is really caught my attention which originally came from another source on the internet Truth or Fiction!

From the original site text:
Denmark: What a shame, we have to spread the news in hope that someone can come and do something about this. Without a doubt man is the worst animal on the planet!

It is hard to believe that in this age that this bloody massacre annually takes place on Faroe Island in a country that claims to be a civilized member of the European Union. It is not publicized that this blood thirsty massacre is a rite of passage into adult life for participating young men. It is incredible that this act of barbarism against this species, a dolphin intelligence that is known to approach people with curiosity has not been made public. Please help spread the word.

From GD:

The “Red Sea” blood every where, a barbaric custom from the stone age has just caught my attention.
I don’t care what the excuse is, but now I have just about seen enough, this makes me sick! I have never seen such a brutal way of killing those harmless animals in this part of Europe, Denmark to be exact, where children helping in the slaughter yet another real “good education” Children even given a day off school so they can participate, Oh Boy...

Whales are sensitive, social animals with highly developed nervous systems. They have a profound capacity to suffer distress, terror and pain. Each year, the Faroese kill pilot whales and other small cetaceans.

Islanders in motorboats first drive the whales into a bay. The chase may be lengthy. The exhausted, terrified and confused whales are eventually driven into the shallows. Here the bloodbath begins. The islanders repeatedly hammer 2.2 kg metal gaffs into the living flesh of each whale until the hooks hold. A 15 cm knife is then used to slash through the blubber and flesh to the spinal column. Next the main blood vessels are severed. The blood-stained bay is soon filled with horribly mutilated and dying whales.

The Faroese celebrate the butchery of their victims in an carnival atmosphere of entertainment. Indoctrinated from an early age, children are often given a day off school to watch the fun. They run down to the bay and clamber over the carcasses of slaughtered whales.

Every year around 2,000 whales are driven ashore and cruelly slaughtered in the Faroe Islands, mid-way between the Shetland Islands and Iceland. For centuries the Faroe Islanders have hunted pilot whales, driving entire schools into killing bays, where they are speared or gaffed from boats, dragged ashore and butchered with knives. Although the Islands are a protectorate of Denmark, they have their own Government and regulations governing the pilot whale hunt or "grind" as it is known.

Aside from the fact that the number of North Atlantic long-finned pilot whales is unknown and they are listed as 'strictly protected' by the Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats, this is an act of barbarism and pointlessness. By slaughtering 100 whales at a time, the Faroese are wiping out entire pods and family groups. They are removing building blocks from the gene pool of the species and damaging the web of life in the North Atlantic and the North Sea.

The drive hunt is a practice abandoned elsewhere many decades ago, and now outlawed by other European states. The inhabitants of the Faroe Islands have no subsistence need for whale meat, and much of the flesh is left to rot and be dumped; it cannot be exported, as it is polluted with heavy metals and other toxins and therefore cannot meet EU heath standards for human food.

According to Faroese legislation it is also permitted to hunt certain species of small cetaceans other than pilot whales. These include: Bottlenose dolphin; Atlantic white-beaked dolphin; Atlantic white-sided dolphin; and Harbour porpoise (There are also specific regulations for the hunting of harbour porpoise. Harbour porpoises are killed with shotguns).

Additional Information from Wikipedia:

The Faroes and Denmark

Faroe islands has been under control from Denmark since 1388, but in the Treaty of Kiel in 1814 terminated the Danish-Norwegian union. Norway came under the rule of the King of Sweden, but the Faroe Islands, Iceland, and Greenland remained as possessions of Denmark. Subsequently, the Løgting was abolished 1816, and the Faroe Islands were to be governed as a regular Danish amt, with the Amtmand as its head of government. In 1851 the Løgting was resurrected, but served mainly as an advisory power until 1948.

At the end of the Second World War a portion of the population favoured independence from Denmark, and on 14 September 1946 a public election was held on the question of secession. It is not considered a referendum, as the parliament was not bound to follow the decision of the vote. This was the first time that the Faroese people were asked if they favoured independence or if they wanted to continue as a part of the Danish kingdom. The outcome of the vote produced a small majority in favour of secession, but the coalition in parliament could not reach a resolution on how this election should be interpreted and implemented, and because of these irresolvable differences the coalition fell apart. A parliamentary election was held just a few months later, in which the political parties that favoured staying in the Danish kingdom increased their share of the vote and formed a coalition. Based on this increased share of the votes, they chose to reject secession. Instead, a compromise was made and the Folketing passed a home-rule law, which came into effect in 1948. The Faroe Islands' status as a Danish amt was brought to an end with the home-rule law; the Faroe Islands were given a high degree of self-governance, supported by a substantial annual subsidy from Denmark.

The islanders are about evenly split between those favouring independence and those who prefer to continue as a part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Within both camps there is, however, a wide range of opinions. Of those who favour independence, some are in favour of an immediate unilateral declaration. Others see it as something to be attained gradually and with the full consent of the Danish government and the Danish nation. In the unionist camp there are also many who foresee and welcome a gradual increase in autonomy even as strong ties to Denmark are maintained.

Those photos are quite graphic. There are systematic slaughter of whales in the regions of southern australia by the japanese. But they claim is for research. Yes I know it's a disgrace but the Australian government allow it to keep the peace.

Leave there homes covered in blood like they do to the sea. We can research their pathetic brains to see why they don't comprehend that they are torturing these innocent little creatures that are not even bothering them. Maybe after seeing how it feels to be sliced up the onez who survice will do away with this barbaric tradition that should have been made illegal years ago!!!!!! Why don't they fight each other instead?? These poor creatures cant fight back how does this prove that they are MEN?? If they were men they would fight something that can fucking fight back!!! how could they teach their children to go against their instincts...to kill and torture for pleasure, like as though they need to prove themselves as careless psychopaths??? shame will find them, not to worry. it is the parents to blame.

@ roxanne: of course we have got plenty of other kinds of food to eat. But catching and killing whales is an old tradition, and the whale meat is the best delicacy of a different world.

And no, the killing is not being executed as explained on this page. Not even close. It is being performed in a much more human way, and for me to read this page; it is just hilarious because this is clean and pure *bullshit* and it gives me a reason to believe that it is only being told to bring hatred upon our beautiful Islands up in the north.

It makes me wonder, thinking of that we are living in a modern world, and still, it is possible to spread so many lies on the internet. This page is as far away from facts, as Alice in wonderland is.. I am sorry to disappoint you guys, but there just ain't any truth in what is being told here

READ THIS BEFORE YOU PEOPLE GO APESH*T!

"Death for those who killed these animals!!" ???? First of all, thanks for proving yourself being a retard.. And that goes to all of you, who thinks that people should die for killing an animal.
Second, why do you think we are killing the whales? Just because it's in our "nasty sick cruel" nature? No. It's because it's food. And it's very tasty. Im pretty sure people who haven't tried to eat whale, don't like it. But we and our ancestors have been raised to eat, what there is to eat. Our nation, The Faroe Islands, is a nation that lives of seafood.

We only kill(eat) pilot whales, which are those you see on the pictures shown above. No other whales. And even though it seems brutal, we are killing them the most human way possible.

Now I got a question for you peeps.. Why do you eat pig? Why do you eat sheep? Why do you eat cattle? Why the hell do you even eat?
Im pretty sure the answer will be one of these two: "To survive." or "Cause it's tasty."

Same reason here. Get it? It's not a sport. It's food. And yeah, maybe it's a bit barbaric, but don't kid yourself. It's the same with the killing of chicken, cattle and every other lifeform. You just don't see it, cause it's done inside a room without spectators and cameras.
If you wanna flame me, go ahead and send me a mail. Im pretty sure I can answer you.

You are all entitled to your own opinion, but you should try to see whale killing from an unbiased perspective. Do you care about the truth or just "your truth"?

It is funny to see grown up's with so low critical sense. Have you ever been to the Faroe islands? have you ever seen a whale killing? What is the procedure? how are they killed?
What kind of laws are there about whale killing in the Faroe Islands?

I strongly encourage anybody who wants to hold an opinion on this issue to get their information from a wide variety of website. This one(puertogaleradive.com) is definitely biased on the matter. Here are some serious webpages on the issue of whale killing in the Faroe Islands:

It's pretty obvious to me that people have no idea what they're talking about. Either this text is written by vegetarians, vegans or some big city bigot.

Let's make an example.

Let's say that you eat a chicken. Why is it that the chickens life is worth more then a whales life?

At least the whale has had the opportunity to live a good life in the open. Where as the chicken the whole time has been in captivity for one single reason... to be eaten.

The pilot whales are not an endangered species. The danes do not go out to hunt them. They do not do it for profit. It's called solidarity.

As for the graphics. It might seem brutal to the foreign eye, but you go and slaughter cows, pigs etc. in the sea and you'll see a whole lot more of blood than in the whale killings.

The killing is fast and is performed with great skill. The blood amount doesn't equal pain, if that's what people think.

Please , everyone stop ! These faroe Islanders are not barbaric. Open your minds. With all the green house gases and pollutants in the world (caused mainly by countries of those complaining and whining about animal rights and cruelty) just stop and think. This method of fishing is humane, yes fishing. These are large fish that are taken from the sea for consumption. In North America the Salmon have been fished to levels so low that the Orca / Killer Whales are starving to death. These dolphins that are fished ,for food for the community, happen once a year, just like our north american fishing seasons for salmon, halibut, crab, shrimp, mussels, etc. With one main difference. These people from an Island community who have a historic connection to the sea do not drag nets across the bottom killing everything in sight, they do not destroy the planet as is common practice elsewhere in the world. Just give up criticising what you do not know. Read some of the legitimate websites , look up the Faroe Islands and the history and current livelihood of these people. The whale meat for food is one thing. Check out all the other planet friendly non greenhouse emitting uses for this plentiful dolphin.
Just for your consciences to put into persepective .. go to Hawaii , outside the tourist attractions and watch the islander children put a live ferret in a cage , hang it from a rope and dance in delight as they try drowning it in turns in the ocean. It isn't done quickly with one dunking, it is dunked under water over a dozen times , passed between the kids, as a known method of play - why , well basically , the poor ferret was caught stealing a chicken to feed it's own family.
Just because you see something upsetting - doesn't mean you should rise up and freak out without knowledge and just because you don't see something upsetting - doesn't mean you can pretend it doesn't happen all around the world. And for much less legitimate reasons than the Faroe Islanders.

What they do on those islands is despicable. These are not humans, but I can't call them animals either! It would be an insult to animals! Monsters, that's what they are! And they even dare speak and try and justify this bestiality! Jesus - the nerve these monsters have! It took my breath away

This must be stopped immediately and I am sure who needs to know knows already. People at the EU and Commission are already aware of this. People, we have be confident that this will be stopped.

To those who tried to justify this by saying it's like killing other animals:
- first I am absolutely sure that there are other things to be eaten on those bloody islands
second, it is so NOT the same thing! and if you feel the need to have a debate on chickens and pigs, why don't you start a separate page on the subject. We were not debating killing pigs and chickens here, we were debating murdering highly intelligent animals that are probably about to go extinct.

You IDIOTS!

I agree - these shitheads should go to hell but first they should be slaughtered the way they are slaughtering these beautiful innocent creatures! Shame on denmark and on those islands!

Yeah.. Good call. Since when the hell did we start to use clubs and stones to kill whales?

In 1978, Watson was expelled from Greenpeace by a vote of 11 to 1 (only Watson himself voted against it). Watson was expelled as he did not share Greenpeace's definition of non-violence. That same year, he founded his own group, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

By the way, that man, Paul Watson, is a big time criminal.
He was arrested in 1993, and 1997 and is also wanted for seven attemted murder charges in Costa Riga.

"In early April 2008, Watson stated that, while the deaths of three Canadian seal hunters (a fourth one is still missing) in a marine accident involving a Canadian Coast Guard vessel and a fishing boat during the 2008 Canadian Commercial Seal Hunt is a tragedy, he feels that the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of baby seals is an even greater tragedy."
How can a normal sane person say something like that?
And since we are talking about wrongs and rights, didn't God create animals, so we PEOPLE could live of them?

In my honest opinion, I think you're all bloody retarded.

If someone wants to be taken serious in a debate, they have to come with ARGUMENTS and not statements.

Well if you state that it not ok to kill whale for food, you also have to argue whether it´s ok to kill pigs, cows or chickens. If you think there is a difference you have to explain why to be taken seriously.

So far in this debate i´ve seen 2 arguments

1. That the whale breed is about to be extinct, and therefore should not be killed for food.

2. That the whale is an intelligent creature, and therefore should not be killed for food.

About nr 1.
Faroe-islanders have used this resource(whale-meat) from the ocean fore hundreds of years, and have exact track record of the numbers as well as other data, which goes back as far as year 1500 something.
On top of that the faroe government have organized scientific whale counting in the north atlantic ocean for many years.
From these records there is absolutely no sign of the extinction of the whale.
Also there is no international scientific warning that the pilot whale (the only whale specie taken by faroeislanders) is a threatened specie. It is simply not on the list of threatened species.

About nr 2.
It is possible that the whale is intelligent, I´m not familiar with animal itelligence tests. However I conclude that if you use intelligence as criteria as if someone is allowed to get killed, well then I conclude you say it´s ok to kill someone just because they are stupid? Still I have not seen a list publicized by activists, that says which animal is to clever to be killed and which is stupid enough to just get slaughtered and eaten away.

If you anyway are going to eat something that´s been alive, I think from a moral standpoint it,s better not to distinguish between intelligence and stupidity. If you feel sorry for a whale than you also should feel sorry for a cow, pig or sheep.

I therefore argue that people who eat burgers are in no position to blame people who eat whale meat.

I realize that some people here argues that it,s not ok to kill any animals at all.
I will not go in to that discussion now, but only say that you folks really have a big job ahead of you, since every fish market, chicken/cattle/pig farm and supermarket-freezer in the whole world is your battlefield. I also expect your reaction at home is in proper relation to tiny tiny small Faroe Islands which not always is see-able on the map and therefore one of the smallest consumers of any meat anywhere anytime ever.

I understand that killing of such a magnificent animal bring up emotion. I understand that after all it is from respect for the animal.
I only wished that you could look a bit inwards and see that the whale is treated 100 times more respectably than your animals at home in their KZcamp-like livelihood.

The wale after all lives a free life until the day it´s picked out of the ocean fore human consumption.

hi everyone...i think most of you have overlooked and didnt understand why its being done...(thast doesnt mean i support it in any way) there was a comment from someone from Faroe island. This is for food. this is not a plesure hunting. But the main question even when its food is how much is required. i know people everywhere will like to hunt as much as possible to make profit.
in this the main point is lost that though some form of hunting may be required or essntial for people to survive but a non regulated hunting may drive these species not even from ares near Faroe island but from the entire earth as some of these species may have travelled and come from far off areas also.
It is essential not only for conservation of these species but also for people of Faroe island to manage and harvest prudently and look for alternatives . Whales and dilphins asre highly intelligent creatures which may be as intelligent or more than any ape we might have known, So there is high human admiration and aesthetic association between human and such creatures. I might remind all that for the same reason the Mountain gorilla is at edge of extinction (bush meat).
For people from Faroe island please find alternative and do regulation on hunting and there are so many international regulation why not adhere to them. Otherwise it may be too late for these species and for the people of Faroe island too as after their extinction they can enjoy these species in their folklore only. We have the power to make decisiion and prevent this extinction which will ultimately force people to look for aternative.
Hope the point is taken..

hi u r missing the point that for beef and pig we have human reared animals and thus they will not be harmed as a species u will get poultry beef or pigs till humans rear them but for the wild speices they will not recover from this slaughter and will die out leaving you with nothing in the future. So read my other comment and do look for alternative in farmed animals rather than on animals who may never get a chance to recover...
Faroe island may have harvested them for centuries but isnt their poplation increasing or dont they harvest more per capita than they have ever did in their history...how long can nature sustain such exploitation......I do not abhore this like other people i just wanted to put a point through taht these species are heading to extinction very soon and then u will be looking for alternatives so why not invest in alternatives now and protect whatever wild creatures are left.

Hi
I just have to correct some miss-assumptions there seems to be.

The faroese whaling is NOT a hunt as such.

It is not like the boats go out and search the ocean and sweep the sea from Shetland to Iceland over to Norway.
This NEVER have been the case fore the simple reason that it´s not possible.

To drive a herd of pilot-whales anywhere you have to have at very least 30-40 boats in formation to get the herd moving.
On the big sea this is not possible since only big ships can go there.
Since F.I first of all don´t have big ships concentrated in that number, and big ships are on the ocean fore commercial reasons like fishing, transporting cargo and such, the only possible way is with small motorboats.

Since small motorboats reach a very few miles because the rough sea area, ONLY whales that on their travel in the big big big Atlantic Ocean, hits spot on the tiny tiny tiny faroe islands within a very few miles, can get driven ashore.

You also might check out the size and placement of the faraoe islands and see fore yourself.

Because of this way of procedure, it is very unlikely that this leads to extinction of the whale.

Meaning: Faroe Island is a dot on the map, like this “ . “ and the travel area of the pilot-whale is almost endlessly bigger than this “spot” they have to hit exactly to get killed.
Meaning: The numbers are not decided by hunting methods, or the growing population on the islands, but ONLY by the numbers randomly hitting the islands.
Meaning: The ocean is big and the islands tiny small, meaning one whale randomly hitting the islands is indication of thousands in other places in the ocean.

If I in any way was of the believe that the pilot whale was in danger of extinction, i would take measures immediately, and I´m convinced any faroe islander would do the same.

And there is a very very ironic side to this story also.
Faroe islanders may very well have to give up their hundreds of years old tradition.... not because of pressure from activist groups from “enlightened” big countries down in main Europe........but from POLLUTION from the very same countries

It is a sad fact that the ministry of health advise faroe islanders only to eat whale meat once a month and pregnant women not at all, because of the high concentration of mercury.

It is not wild guess and speculation, that the origin of the mercury found in the sea mammals, is from the main Europe big industry, - but a scientific fact

So you fancy street smart people may very well have it your way very soon,....not because of Faroe islanders willingly giving up their tradition .....but by final extinction of the whale specie driven by POLLUTION from well meaning self righteous mainland Europeans, who fore share economic reasons are not willing to offer their lifestyle in trade of clean environment fore our descendants, and who do not demand their governments to do what is needed.

This truly is a paradox is´nt it?

PS
Ill be away in the weekend and can´t write back until someday next week

To Rishi Kumar.

Finally, someone with a worthy point of discussing. Thank you for pointing out what you are talking about.

We are only killing pilot whales, and pilot whales are not an endangered species. Far from it. The pilot whale population is flurishing.
We don't go out to search for the whale. We don't hunt. If a group of whales come near our islands, we lead them into our bays and kill them.
There is no business involved. No one get's paid and no one is selling the meat.
The whale meat will be given to everyone in that village for free, they just have to come down to the harbour to claim their meat. If there is too much whale for a village, the leftover meat will go to the neighbour village.

I don't agree with you, that we should stop what we're doing, basicly because of the big population.
It's actually a simple math:
Whale eat very little fish. Bigger fish(Cod etc.) also eat the little fish(little squids, etc). Our nations economy is based on the fishing industry. If the whales are eating all the "little fish" from the "big fish", there eventually will be a crack in our economy.
There are around 500.000 pilotwhales in the ocean, at the current moment, and we kill maybe 1500 a year.
Trust me, we're not pushing the limit.

The Pilot whale is a protected species that are listed as 'strictly protected' by the Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats. The Faroe Islands are not independant of Europe and therefore in strict breach of this act. The fact of the matter is that the barbarity of this or any other killings as such across the globe cannot be justified in any means by a member of the so called 'higher order thinking animal' that is the human species. To do so is a complete contradiction and a perfect example of evolutionary stagnation. Traditions as such should be left in the past, a true measure of human evolution, awareness and compassion. The inhabitants of the Faroe Islands should lead by example, instead of justifying it. There are no justifications for this kind of behaviour from an evolved human. That is the plain truth of the matter.

A few more facts about whaling

1. It´s non commercial. Not exported. No profit. Everybody get their share, the catch is distributed evenly to every household

2. There is no job called "whale hunter".
It is strictly an "off-job" community-matter.

3. When it is estimated that people have enough, whaling is banned from the authorities in a proper period. Breaking this rules is punished by the law.

You are all welcome to Faroes to participate in whale-hunting. It is a old tradition, and I can promise you all that we are not doing this for fun. This is a part of our identity. We have done this for 1000 of years and will continue to do that. We are killing approx 1000 whales a year, but it depends on how often these whales are coming that close that we can catch them. The worst thing here is that the whales are full of quicksilver,PCB, DDT, HCH, dieldrin etc. And that is the enemy for the whales - not only the pilotwhales, but for all creatures in the sea, and the Faroese people that eats whales. The polution is done by the big countries like UK,USA,France,Germany etc.

I think this discussion can be divided in two parts

1. Any animal killing should be strictly forbidden.

2. It is ok to kill animals fore human consumption

About nr.1
If you are against any animal killing, then we really are not discussing whale killing, but every piece of dead meat eaten on this planet.

I therefore think this discussion should reflect that.

However interesting this issue(animal killing fore food) might be from a philosophical wiev, this is not an issue specialy concerning Faroe Islands, whom therefore should not be bashed, since you have your 20 menu meat restaurant right down your alley you can go parading with posters and banners. (How come I bet you don´t?)

This is a matter of every hotdog, schrimp cocktail, lobster, fish and chips, french snails, frog legs, oysters, chicken fried, porky pie, fillet steak, jambolaya, turkey, lamb chops.

To you people I say, get a grip of perspective and keep the topic “animal killing fore food” as a general seperate discussion, and if you absolutly must, keep “whale meat on the Faroe Islands” in the right context as the smallest consumer there is.

About nr 2:
People who are not vegeans and eat meat that comes from animals, are of course of the conviction that it´s ok to kill animals fore human consumption.
I belive many of you who have written on this board belong to this category.
You go to restaurants, order your steaks and burgers without hesitation or bad contscience

But somehow you seem to restrict your convictions to only be valid when they include your favorit meals at home.
When other people claim their right to execute the same convictions, there seems to be a problem
There is a name fore this kind of practice - double standards
People who demand one standard from others, and another from them self, have double standards
When these same people publically claim their special rights of which they deny others, there is also a word for that - hypocrisy
............................................................................................

Of course I understand that it is possible to have have the conviction that it is ok to kill animals fore human consumption, and at the same time be of the belive that this must be done conscincely with respect to different criteria.

A couple of reasonable criterias comes to my mind. There should not be any danger of extinction, concideration to the stock, the killing metode must be human and effective, no stress and harm during transport and slaugther, an overall good life to the animal during it´s whole lifespan etc.
I find these criterias fundamental, reasonable and since this is not a perfect world,
discussion-worthy.

On the other hand I find criterias put up by some of you (cat.2 people who eat meat remember!) a bit fluffy
INTELLIGENSE (monkey/whale,-clever, respect do not eat ...... cow/pig, –stupid, eat away)
SPECIE (horse/dog/cat, -do not eat , don´t know why.......... fish/lamb/turkey, eat away don´t ask why)
AESTHETICS (whale, polar bear, – beautiful, respect do not eat ...... snails, frogs,- ugly, eat away)

I just find some of the “criteria” hard to discuss because they are highly based on subjective individual interpretation.

By basing the standpoint in this matter upon everyones individual tast, feelings and emotions, there is big danger that theese are in favour of big beautiful animals, while nobody cares about a frog or beetle getting killed in your backyard polluted waste-pipe, -threatned specie or not.

By basing a standpoint on everchanging feelings and not consistant scientific considerations, it is the share feelings themself who are the center of attention and not the matter itself.
This is a dangeourus route wich eventualy may harm the cause you think you are defending.

I only ask fore rational stringent arguments where you do not logicaly contradict yourself in a manner wich makes it impossible to lead a sensible discussion.

European say the Muslims are wild because of killing sheep as a symbol of Ibrahim story (one of God's messenger); So in this situation, what can we call Danish people in central of modern Europe?

Ehh...well?? what is so special about eating sheep? Nothing special muslim about that!!
Yes danes eat sheep (wich of course are killed when they do so) . They buy them in supermarkets, and so do germans, englishmen, australians, new zealanders, american, brazilians ..........
However modern these countrys are ever going to be, I don´t think they are going to eat sheeps alive.

And by the way, same case with the whales, you can´t eat them alive, you have to kill them first, sorry!
Who is wild??

You should see what they do to the pigs (and other animals). It is very sad. Pigs are proven to be more intelligent then dogs. And did you know in countries such as France, Japan, and Belgium they actually torture the horses before slaughtering it. I think its horrible how people treat animals, animals nervous systems and emotions are much more sensitive then humans. So basically they feel the pain a lot more intensely then most people think which is why animal cruelty should be stopped. Unless the way animals are treated before they are killed changes for the better, i will always think it is bad to eat meat. Animals should not have to suffer so much in their lives. It is wrong.
As for this whale/dolphin killing tradition.. it is a tradition based on ignorance and there is nothing more to it.

@X shadow

Do you really belive yourself?

Horse torture in France, Japan and Belgium?
Do you really believe this is done systematicly and every horse killed these countrys is tortured?

And slaughtering horses?

I have never heard about eating horse-meat in any of these countrys. As the matter of fact I don´t believe horses are consumed anywhere in the western world, exept maby by some native tribes in the jungle somewhere.

I sencerely believe that you might have read some freaky website and taken it fore the ultimate truth.

Also I think you are a pretty good example of how many of the enviroment-groups work, as they pick up some “facts” that supports their believe, and use it in their campaign, however far-out they migh be.

This time France, Japan and Belgium was the victim of some obscure allocations with no hold in reality,
and now maby some of you see how this is the same thing happening when many of you express yourself blatantly about Faroeese matters of wich you have no idea.

Well after studying things a little better, I now see I was wrong. It seems like they DO consume horsemeat in the countrys mentoined by X_shadow.(from what I can find by searching the internet anyway).

The question is, does this change my original message? About not to divide animals in to types of which some are ok to eat and other a death sin to eat.
And also not to use fluffy criterias like intelligense, beauty or maby old taboos, when deciding who´s to live and who´s to die.

When X_shadow brings up horsemeat and his claim of systematic torture, i think it has to do with the taboo of eating horsemeat in big parts of the world.
Since there is no logical explanation or difference in using a horse as well as cow for consumption, somebody seemingly has to invent horrorstorys about horsetorture to legitimate their opposition to horsekilling over other animalkilling

If they systematicly torture horses in France, it is within reason to assume they torture ALL animal-species used for consumption.
And how plausible do you think that is?

I,m convinced these storys are carried by some pre-judgemental bias towards what you already believe in.

Of course i have heard storys about animal-mistreatment. This happens all over the world sadly enough.
But that is not answer to the basic question "is it ok or not to use animalmeat for human consumption?"

"Animalmeat for human consumption" is a big philsophical questions, wheras animal-mistreatment is another issue that actually is not a question, because it is against the law and should not be tolerated in any circumstances.

A reasonable person should be able to separate those as two individual issues, and evaluate them accordingly separat.

i've read through the entire page and one way to see just how little research people do about this is that they keep calling us danes
some of us here on the islands find that kinda offensive (and i bet the danes don't like being called whale killers either)

and to all who wish us good faroese folks stabbed to death or whatever: dream on
us godfearing and peaceloving people just don't experience things like that very often
i wouldn't be surprised if all the murders here in the last 50 years or so could be counted on only one hand
but you just keep polluting the oceans and maybe we'll just go away... along with the whales of course

I hope none of you who are opposed to whale and dolphin hunting eat chicken. Chicken are in Holland, England, France and Belgium kept in tiny cages unable to move. They live like that all their life before they eventually are electrocuted, very often not instantly. The chicken can sense that they are being sent to slaughter, and get stressed just like dolphins. The difference is that chicken don't have a life at all, and many of them go insane in their cages because of the restricted movement and lack of stimulation.

Needless to say, killing and eating chicken is a LOT worse than eating whale. Whales and dolphins live a great life in the free until they get fairly old. Chicken don't, they are being tortured. Whales and dolphins are killed in a matter of seconds, some times it takes minutes if things go wrong, but still a lot better than a natural death which is a lot worse. Dying of cancer or something else takes time and is extremely painful. No drugs like paralgin forte for the animals unfortunately. No, they get no pain relief from the doctors. Just because you don't see them dying in front of your eyes, don't mean they don't suffer before they die.

A whale weighs between 5-10 tonnes and therefore contain 5000-10000 times more meat than a chicken. What is better? Kill one life for 15000 meals, or one life for two meals?

But people are dumb. They see the blood-stained water and think emotionally about it. They are so detached from the nature, and only know they their chicken from the supermarkets, ready wrapped without heads or feathers.

So turn your attention to the horrible Dutch, Belgians, French and English. Italy and Spain probably does it as well, and the latter country, Spain, are torturing bulls for THE FUN OF IT! And then you have the Pamplona bulls race. Unbelieveable!

To all the Faroese people justifying this hunt to you realise pilot whaled are an intensely social animal? Thats why they don't all separate when you herd them with your boats. You kill the whales one at a time, and the surviving members of the family have to see the blood and hear their cries. DO you ever stop to listen? Or are you just getting off on causing pain and seeing blood spill. You cut to their spine through LIVING flesh. ANd then sever it, causing paralysis, NOT DEATH. They can no longer move but are still conscious. Rarely do you show death throes, but in the youtube I have seen whales with injuries are STILL MOVING. ANd by the way, dont rationalise this with slaughrer houses, we dont let our children play in the blood of dead cows. You truely are barbarians.

You say we should not rationalise this with slaugterhouses.

In other words you defend slaugterhouses over whalekilling, as someting better.

I assume you know what they do in slaugterhouses? Yes they kill animals!!

In other words you defend killing of animals.

The harmfulness and sadness of you SaddenedOne is not aimed at the killing of an innocent animal, wich you obviously are fine with, as long as your children doesn´t see the blood.

Since you SaddenedOne approve killing of animals, I must assume you are not against killing of whales.
Actually I have to assume you are not against killing of any animalspecie at all, as long as it can be eaten and slaugthered out of your sight.

I think it´s good for the discussion to get to the core of things and see what´s behind the emotional harmful sadness of SaddenedOne with references to barbars and all,- that it´s not the killing in itself but.......

it´s all down to killingMETODE.

Now we have straigthen things out and come to termes with that this strictly is about killingMETODES, I think it´s fair that people from Faroe Islands compare their metodes with the metodes of people who blame them.
People who blame others must have teir buisness ok first.
I know two wrongs don´t make one right, but you can´t expect to gain any credibility by coming this forcefully on others buisness and refusing to look at your own.

PS As for killingmetodes and general wellbeing of the whale trough it´t whole lifespan versus reared cows, chicken, pigs and slaugtherhouses, I have already said much but can always repeat later.

Yes, the read the BBC article for a more balanced account - here:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/from_our_own_correspondent/3104494.stm

Very sad the whales must be killed, yes!, but the people need the meat for they are hungry. There are no McDonalds on those cold and remote islands, thus they are forced to subsidize their diet from the sea. Also it is over a 1000 year tradition. Americans must give up their thanksgiving turkey first, merely a couple hundred year tradition. Also, the article says, and I quote:
"...small children climbed onto the dead whales, which had grinning mouths lined with small sharp teeth."
Two important points here
1) The whales are grinning, thus we can conclude they are happy to give their lives to help the Islanders live.
2) Living so remotely, the children have little play with so will climb upon the whales. Have you seen the movie, 'Whalerider'? Children love whales and vice-versa, and in fact this might be WHY the whales were grinning, because of the opportunity to be close to the children.

Last but not least, these people are ignorant islanders. Are you going to castigate the Maori indians for tatooing their babies bums or what about the Hawaiians? Until recently (geologically speaking) they practiced human sacrifice!

SO we really need to put this all in perspective.
Peace....

The Germans were slaughtered in higher numbers beyond compare. Maybe as many as 20 million from WWI to WWII. Many died from the city bombings and the cruelty after the wars. From 1918 to 1990 the Jewish Communists killed around 65 million Eastern Europeans and nobody in the world lifted a finger to help. The Chinese have had somewhere around 100 million Chinese killed by a system introduced to them by the Jews. Not many people know these stories. The Americans wrote the history books.
Everyday millions of chickens, cows, horses, goats, turkeys, and many other species of animals are slaughtered for food. They club seal pups in the head and now this whale story. The only reason we now about it is because someone told the story. Ever heard of a little things called 'stunning'? Or rendering an animal insensitive to pain prior to slaughter? This is done in most slaughterhouses. There are hundreds of thousands of cases where this doesn't work, and slaughtering goes ahead with a conscious animal, as PETA will tell you.

But at least it is attempted.

The difference is this....
Cows are not chased across fields by trucks to the facility.
Once there they are not hauled into the factory by their noses, or jabbed with hooks and pulled in.
Cows are stunned before a throat slit that severs blood flow to the brain. This cutting is done buy a TRAINED worker, who can do the cut the first time.
Compare this to having to cut through ... 10 inches? of flesh by an UNTRAINED person, through a fully conscious and moving animal. CONSCIOUS animal. ANd then through BONE.

Oh yeah. The difference is I don't take my little brother to watch, play in the blood. To look and climb on cow carcasses with their guts coming out.

I live here in the Faroe Islands and yes, we do kill whales once in a time.. We dont go out looking for them.. we only kill them if they come close.
It is an old tradition. The Faroe Islands are located far to the North and in old times the people here hadn't much to eat. The only meat we got was from sheeps and whales. The islands are in the middle of the ocean and food only came from Denmark when the whether allowed ships to sail. Now - about 200 years later, we still kill whales - but only 2-3 times a year and it is the best meat you can get! And please.. We do not kill dolphins or any threaten whale species.
The situation now is though, that the whale is polluted and is therefore not healty to eat so in a few years we probably wont eat whale meat anymore. Happy now?

Sincerely, a picture is worth more than a thousand words. I am from Argentina and we reeeaally love eating barbecues. To that end, cows must die to provide the meat we are going to eat. In this, I relate to the Faroe islanders. Yet, even when certain practices are centuries old, they CAN evolve. Atrocities take place everywhere on the globe: horse-fighting in the Phillipines, seals killing somewhere in the north, terrorist attacks and "so-called" measures to ensure homeland security that end up being simply slaughter overseas. OK: this pilot whales are animals and they are food. Yet, there must be some other way to get their meat. Yes: I get meat at the butcher's and I've seen cows and chicken being killed. But it doesn't happen in such a dramatic scenario. I wonder if we'll ever realize that whatever we do to others someday somehow comes back to us. That also goes for Japanese ships hunting whales illegally in South Atlantic ocean (a whale sanctuary). Anyway, GOD will some day judge every single one of us... I wonder what excuse we'll come up with for our MANY, GIGANTIC MISTAKES.

The killing is barbaric for sure, but then please also stop the Norwegians and Japaneese people from killing the real endangered whales (They do that!)

And stop the fishermen using trawl from killing Dolphins
by drowning them in their net
(You might eat Doplhin when you believe it to be Tuna-fish!)

Remember Dolphins are sentient beings and very intelligent.

When Egypt decided to slaughter its pigs to avoid the spread of the swine flue, dozens of articles and videos were all over the media criticizing Egypt for slaughtering those pigs.
I wanted to write about why that same people did not talk when the Israelis killed and slaughtered Palestinian children, but I said maybe they don't care about Palestinian Children.
Now I found this slaughter of some kind of whales and dolphins

I ask myself where is the media ??

Disgusting. I would never compare animals to humans. For animals are far greater than us. Human beings are so greedy and dispicable. This is why our world is suffereing. All of you who abuse and kill animals are murderers. You have no heart and sure have experience in killing. I agree with all of these people who are sane, as for the rest of you who kill these defenseless creatures for research or w/e, it's wrong. People who are diagnosed with cancer and shit just need to die naturally. All other animals die naturally. When it's your time, don't take meds or anything to make your self live for an extended time. Animals are more important than humans. We need to halt human population before it's too late. With all of the land being destroyed there will be no more wildlife. If human population keeps increasing like it is now.

you morons who fight bacj saying its normal and that you do this hunt because of food blah blah blah, and you even put websites XD which makes things even funnier...why?? Well you see:

Most Faroese consider the hunt an important part of their culture and history. Animal-rights groups criticize the hunt as being cruel and unnecessary, while the hunters claim in return that most journalists do not exhibit sufficient knowledge of the catch methods or its economic significance. As of the end of November 2008 the chief medical officers of the Faroe Islands have recommended that pilot whales no longer be considered fit for human consumption because of the levels of toxins in the whales.

SO all you buffons will eat a whale thats full of toxins that could kill you.... really brilliant idea XD

So before you try and speak, please check the facts first, have a good argument not just justify everything with culture crap and eating habits, read then speak...

this makes me sick to my stomach, you Faroe people say that you are killing the whales for food but thousands of whales are being killed and that cant just be for food consumption plus it has been said that the whales are to polluted for people to consume. and as for those who have said that it is fun and that they get turned on from killing (murdering) those beautiful intelligent creatures you are very sick individuals. the whales are killed in a very brutal way, thet are cut to pieces, struggling and terrified trying to escape the bloodied waters of denmark. there is no need for this to be going on in the 21st century. how can you not feel bad for taking the whales life away watching as it slowly bleeds to death next to its brothers, sisters etc. also the people of denmark have written that it needs to be done and that they do it puley to get there food, then why is there a picture of a young boy smiling whilst holding a knife into a dead whale _ looks to me like hes having too much fun SICK!

I have received an email for the killing of pilot whales today, which has lead me to this website. After visiting wikipedia and going through all the comments on this page I have come to some conclusions;

1-Before commenting, we should all do proper research.
2-Never bring religion or politics in issues of humanity, humanity has no religion nor does it has any boundaries.
3-Please stop pointing fingers to other countries or people who are doing anything else wrong. Its better to stick with the topic to sort it out.

Now some facts.

1-Pilot whales are not endangered species, you can confirm at the following link.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilot_whale#Population_and_distribution

I am pretty sure that Island's government must be controlling the killing to ensure future supply for the island.

2-Whale killing in Faroe island is a tradition, the population of short fin pilot whales is around 150,000 whereas around 1000-2500 are killed by the islanders for food, a reminder to all dear friends, it is not a commercial hunt. Commercial hunting is done by Japan of around 400-1000 pilot whales a year. However, as the species is not endangered so no one is counting the actual number killed.

3-Green peace is not interfaring! I am a member of greenpeace save the whaling campagne.Unfortuantely, I have never received info about killing in this region. Look like greenpeace is only interested in the cases where Japanese are killing whales. There is nothing on this issue on their website as well. I will get in touch with them about this issue.

4-The method used to kill these whales is no doubt inhuman. I would request our friends in faroe islands if they can consider killing the whales in a more humane way. Instead of stoning, harpooning, scaring the animal, making their deaths miserable, most painful and merciless as I have seen in pictures & videos from different websites please find a way to make their death more quick and less painful. The idea of using a very sharpe big blade seems logical, but how long the animal suffer before it dies?

5-While leading whales to bay, please try to leave out whales with calves as it is simply cruel.

I am really glad to see the enthusiasm to save whales, please could you also contribute towards stopping these;

a-Inhuman killing of seal pups in Canada & Greenland, the term barbicans is best suited to the hunters who are beating to deaths these poor creatures and even when they are killed using hakapik, the number killed is huge.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2dYNLwtRkc&feature=related

b-Whale killing by Japan in the name of scientific research.

c-Shark finning in its most cruel form in South Pacific, where the shark is still alive when its fins are cut & is thrown back in waters to die a painful death.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shark_finning

as shown in this small video on you tube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2UKgLsOhRM

We have been given one earth only, so we better take care of it instead of waiting for others to do something, coz if we wait, there will be nothing left to take care of!

Kind regards to all.

ROFL. that looks like fun! We have a boner while killing them, love the helpless look in the babywhales eyes while we kill its mother over and over again.

OH YEAH!. that takes me back. i remember that hunt. we got 1483 whales and 741 dophins in 1 catch. ofc the smell from them rotting in the sand was unbareable, but it was worth it!

the real crime here is the awfull taste of those whales. they are useless, but stabbing those baby whales as they try to escape makes it all worth while.

Maybe some people are different, but people who can have pleasure in such things are truly heartless.

I have read some arguments from the people of the Faroe Islands justifying the killings. They are quite nonsensic in their strive to pretend it is not a barbaric activity.

One recurrent argument is to say that similar events take place in industrial plants where cows, pigs, etc., are killed. This is ridiculous. In industrial plants, animals are being killed under strict conditions, by professionals (that is, people who get paid for doing it and who do not do it for pleasure or to show off), and to make profits.

In the Faroe Islands, the killing is not part of a civilized activity -making profits-. It is a consequence of tradition. The killing is done by a bunch of men who find pleasure in the event (they do not do it for money), they do it to show off in front of their women and their peers. This is clearly barbaric. You find similar behaviours in some tribes in Africa and the Amazonia.

I'm not necessarily in favor that the slaughter has to be banned but you, faroese, must admit you are barbaric. You belong to an uncivilized tribe. I'm sorry but it is not a civilized activity to jump in the water and start hitting an animal with a hook to demonstrate you are a man.

So, admit you do not belong to civilization, and continue with your tradition.

Look at that they are saying, "oh yeah, you tell us that what we do is awful...but you kill pigs! they shed more blood!" that argument truly does nothign to prove your points.

the point is, this is disgusting. A massacre that proves a young boy is now a man? killing for entertainment? How does a human being an asshole and takign advantage of a being that doesn't stand a chance prove manhood? it just proves weakness and foolishness.

Animal abuse all over the world is wrong. The cats and dogs skinned for their fur in china, the harp seals massacared in canada every srping, the sharks in china that are let to die slow painful deaths for their fins, the pigs in our horrendous farms, and the poor chickens in McDonald's. One act does not justify the other. Stop defending your cause by pointing figuers somewhere else. What you're doing jsut proves how much of an idiot you are and howmuch you are lacking to be an intelligent being. faroese, consider this:

pigs, cows, chickens, and sheeps are reared in the farm or elsewhere. they are being propagated. we are pretty sure that centuries from now they will not go into extinction unlike the free swimming whales and dolphins.

the above mentioned livestocks can be put under medication when they are sick so as to prolong their life as well as to assure that they can produce more healthy offsprings but, how can you medicate sick whales and dolphin and assure that they are always in a good health more specially their offsprings, their next generation.

im concern more on our future earth. i hope that our succeeding generations could be able to see these whales and dolphins alive.

Ok, at my first impression of the pictures i was chocked! But before i decided to make a stupid comment here i try to read a bit on internet and get more informations about that!

1. Faroe Islands is not Denmark! Its a own state, but still have some conections with Denmark. Denmark is member ot the european community, Faroe Island not.

2. Most humans eat animals...and we all know where the meat comes from. But we will not see what happend with the animal until it is ready and delicios wrapped in the supermarket! We should all think about some animals live before they will be killed! in small boxes, no daylight and what ever..... they only live, if it can be called life, for beeing killed and eaten! Think about that when you next time sit in front of a great steak in a restaurant!

3. There are many countrys in the world wich have for other people strange rituals, traditions or ways of hunting and killing animals..... Thats it what it makes our world so different! So if you sit here and judge other nations for something you dont like, think about your traditions first and what other think maybe about that!
To give you some excemples: China: how they treat dogs in small boxes for get ready to be eaten.... or the way some muslime killing animals, just by cutting of the neck and wait to get empty of blood and die slowly (halal?)

Ohh, you mean that is all far away from your country..... no problem, try to get information about your nearest chicken farm! Where male chicken will be killed, because they can not be "used" only the females may have that "beautiful live" with almost no space in boxes....
Remember that next time you put your teeth in a "finger licking good" chicken.....!

Im not from Faroe Island and also not from Denmark! I come from Europe!

Hope i could make some think a bit more about all that!

They aren't doing it for fun, they actually eat the meat.
But, I agree with one of the other posters that the difference is that chicken and beef are farmed so that there are more for people to eat whereas pilot whales are not farmed and something like this could cause the extinction of a beautiful species if it is not properly controlled.

I just cant help comparing an experience I had a couple of months ago where we had 50 pilot whales that beached in Cape Town, the public rallied around trying to save them and in the end they were euthanised. There was huge outcry that not enough was done to save these animals and since then the whales that have beached subsequent to this have been swam out to sea (compromising the safety of the humans) or carried on a trailer to the nearest harbour, basically every effort possible has been made to save just ONE whale, yet the Faroe islanders happily butcher hundreds of these very same creatures. Now I totally get the argument about there being no difference between a chicken and a whale as far as food is concerened and the difference in their quality of life before they are turned into food.... BUT there is a huge aspect these Faroe islanders are overlooking and at the risk of sounding like a flaky hippy.... It is no coincidence that humans feel an unexplainable love and compassion and some kind of link with these creatures and this is because there is something that resonates with us humans towards these animals on an ancient inexplicable soul level (well some of us anyway)
I believe these Faro islanders are basically very backward not in a stupid ignorant way but in a depth of soul way. Basically they are unable to see past the hunger or the practicality of killing the whales to realise on a deeper soul level that these animals are special and different to a chicken or a cow. The Faroe islanders have very retarded (backward and shallow souls and hopefully them and people like them will advance to our level and colelctive consciousness will thrive. Until then, we ahve to be patient until they advance to our level. Its like they are blind and they need to be taught to see. We shouldnt criticise them for being such backward souls that can not see furhter than an old barbaric tradition or their hungry bellies.

Seeing these children on the beach with those beached pilot whales in Cape Town, lovingly pouring water onto the whales from their buckets, willing them with their little childrens souls to live compared to the grinning face of a Faroe island child sitting in a pool of blood next to a slaughtered whale says it all in the differenc between a backward soul that cannot see the difference between a whale and a chicken and the advanced soul who knows somewhere deep within them that these creatures are special.

It hurts me, as a Danish citizen, to see the name "Denmark" repeated so many times in the article. The whale killing has nothing, whatsoever, to do with regular Danes. In fact, our nation has virtually nothing to do with the Faroese people any longer, so I would have liked to see a clearer distinction between our countries. Obviously, it confuses many readers, who don't appreciate the "Additional Information from Wikipedia: The Faroes and Denmark", which was added to the article, I suppose, to prevent this misguided interpretation. Sigh.

So these sensitive creatures with high intelligence are killed to be eaten?? So how many people does the meat of one dolphin feed? I can understand killing one or two to feed the community, but this killing is insane. How can it be stopped? Even the whole killing act seems a bit barbaric to say the least. There is nothing humane about it. This is purely human greed for MONEY! The meat and body parts gets exported to enrich WHO? I took the time to read most of the comments. The problem lies in wiping out just about the entire group of dolphins. For species to survive there need to be different gene groups to prevent defects and the disappearing of the specie. If animals gets listed as endangered this – for those who seems to think there is nothing wrong in the picture – this means protect them or else they will become extinct. See how much fun you then going to have hunting dolphins.

I have read every single one of these comments, read the article, done some research.... I still dont agree with this tradition, but I do not wish you death either. All that needs to be done is to fix this, so that it is not giving this cruel image to the world. And that those animals don't suffer.
How about not involving the young and inexperienced? I've read some good comments from both sides. Can anyone then answer the good points that people like saddenedone have made? why are those points just left aside and forgotten? You guys answer the stupid and ignorant comments because they are easy, but how about the ones making good points for a change?
It has been said that a whale will feed many while a chicken few. Then why is it that you have to kill 1000 whales a year??? You say your islands are small, then do you really need that much food? You say it will all be eaten at the end, but that would be more of a delicacy, which contradicts the fact that your killing is justified because you eat them. Its a sport, a tradition, not a necessity.
I don't like slaughter houses either, and I am not vegetarian. But most of those animals are killed quickly, behind closed doors, by experienced people, and the meat is distributed around the world. Yeah they overkill too, but guess what, they are also facing these "shouldnt be done" comments. No need for you to point a finger. We are probably judging them too. But yeah we do still go to the supermarket and buy meat. Then again we buy it to eat it and survive. And we would not like to do the killing. Not that it makes it better. It just means civilization has evolved and we leave it to the people that know how to do it, thus hoping to cause the less pain. When we see images that seem unnecessarily cruel of animals being killed by these slaughter houses, we go against them too and try to fix it or close them down. We still have a lot of work to do. But back to this point....
So just helps us understand you better instead of telling us to look somewhere else. Why can't you kill less? why not leave the experienced islanders to do the job? how about limiting the number of kills it even more? make it only about necessity rather than tradition. I'm sure that when it was created, years and years ago, those people didn't think it would become what it is today.
So please, help us better understand THIS issue. Give us the information you think we need to know before judging. Don't tell us to look at slaughter houses instead, we already do!

i am justed as saddened as everyone else who has commented on this site, as a scuba diver and nature lover it is literally sickening to see these pictures.

does anyone have a suggestion as to what all of the people commenting on this site can do to actually help the situation? not a petition (which never seems to accomplish anything) but something we can actually do to change this practice.

i have read many of the comments and as some have mentioned, because this is not an endangered species this is not an area of concern for the relevant organisations, and it is that countries right to 'fish' there own territory, however something must be done to regulate the methods here, perhaps that these people cannot kill the animals on shore, or must get a licence to do so.

i cannot think of how to help with this situation, any suggestions are welcome. us animal-lovers must stop being lazy and do something, harsh words on a website is not enough!!

hey guys this is nothing, here in africa we are way more savage than you could ever imagine, the only diference is that we drink the blood of the cows and sheep we kill in a traditional way. we dont waste it letting it wash away with the current, we then eat the vital organs raw not even the urine of the animals goes to waste we put it in little containers and each time we go hunting we smeer it on our bodies to take away the human smell when we want to take a kill on the bow and arrow. after all this we strip the skin of the animal we then strip all our clothes off our bodies we then wear the skin of the animal and thus behold............ we become the animal. we can manage cattle and poultry in our country but as a resedent of the coastline we have harvested wales for quite some time and we dont do it anymore because we cant seem to find the wales anymore now people blame us and say we have driven the wales to extinction i think they might be right!!!!

The harvesting of wales have many advantages the main use for our wales was to use them for land fill because we live in a mineing country.

the popultion control of the ocean is not something that us as humans can manage.
This wale massacre should and will come to an end.
we will answer for our deeds done on earth.

While I must admit that what appears to be the senseless killing of animals seems horrifying, the fact remains that it is a traditional rite of passage. It's customary for such ceremonies in cultures all over the world although we don't have much use for them any more. The only thing that bothers me about this tradition is that I wonder if they eat all of the meat. If they are just killing the whales and dolphins for the ritual and they aren't eating the meat then I would definitely have to say that the whole rite of passage.

Whaling
Killed pilot whales on the beach in the village Hvalba on the southernmost Faroese island Suðuroy, 11 August 2002.

Whaling in the Faroe Islands has been practiced since 1584.[13] It is regulated by Faroese authorities but not by the International Whaling Commission as there are disagreements about the Commission's competency for small cetaceans. Around 950 Long-finned Pilot Whales (Globicephala melaena) are killed annually, mainly during the summer. The hunts, called "grindadráp" in Faroese, are non-commercial and are organized on a community level; anyone can participate. The hunters first surround the pilot whales with a wide semicircle of boats. The boats then drive the pilot whales slowly into a bay or to the bottom of a fjord.

Most Faroese consider the hunt an important part of their culture and history. Animal-rights groups criticize the hunt as being cruel and unnecessary, while the hunters claim in return that most journalists do not exhibit sufficient knowledge of the catch methods or its economic significance.[14][15][16]

As of the end of November 2008 the chief medical officers of the Faroe Islands have recommended that pilot whales no longer be considered fit for human consumption because of the levels of toxins in the whales.

Islanders in motorboats first drive the whales into a bay. The chase may be lengthy. The whales are eventually driven into the shallows. The islanders hammer 2.2 kg metal gaffs into the flesh of each whale until the hooks hold. A 15 cm knife is then used to slash through the blubber and flesh to the spinal column. Next the main blood vessels are severed.

The Faroese treat the hunt as a festive occasion. Children are often given a day off school.[citation needed]

1. Some members on here in defending themselves, are alleging that the pilot whales killings are for food purposes....Funny how wikipedia CLEARLY states the pilot whale has been forbidden as food due to the fact that it contains TOO MANY TOXINS?!

2. Those who refer to us "normal" folk who eat chicken and beef .... well, chickens and cows are bred for that specific purpose.... to eat, I repeat: THEY ARE BRED FOR THIS PURPOSE! I don't see schools of whales being bred in controlled conditions for kulling purposes or food.

3. Please refer to picture #3 - If these animals are killed in a humane way, what the heck is this guy doing with the hook????

4. One of the posted comments asks the question if we should then kill someone if their stupid based on the argument that whales are intelligent creatures, my answer: Yes - And it so happens that the people in these pictures are prime suspects.

5. Tradition you say? Well - cannibalism was also tradition - Would a judge pardon you for eating your sister or brother on the excuse that it's tradition?

6. Read the following excerpt from site: (http://www.savethewhales.org/pilot.html) - "As a measure of their intelligence, we only have observances of pilot whales raised in captivity.they have demonstrated substantial intelligence in performing their tasks. They have also been used by the military to do tasks previously performed by dolphins. They have assisted in the rescue of sailors trapped in crippled submarines, detected and recovered mines and other unexploded ordnance."

To the people of the Faroe Islands - May the blood of these innocent beings forever haunt you!

As a person from Danish heritage I am ashamed and horrified at what I have seen and read. The true measure of maturity and growth is proven by ones compassion and knowledge of right and wrong. What I see in these photo's are nothing but a bunch of barbaric children who have clearly not matured and will forever remain impitent boys who need to resort to violoence and cruelty to try to prove to themselves that they are not a waste of space & air. I only hope that one day we can stand up and finally put an end to this type of atrocity and stop slaughtering helpless creatures.

Why do you say it's Denmark's fault? I don't get it.. I'm a dane and as far as i know everyone in Denmark is against this way of killing animals. Acually a lot of young people in Denmark volunteer to different kinds of projects around the world.. like being a teacher in a third-world country or help animals in need.

It is on the Faroe Islands and not in Denmark. So why not blame them instead of us?
I know the Faroe Islands once was a part of Denmark, but it's not anymore. After April the first it became a home rule..

Don't blame Danish people for this - Faroe Islands do not have more with Denmark to do than the fact that it used to be their colony (I am not Danish). I read the article in Wikipedia and it's not Danish laws, it's the Faroese laws that allow these people to do this.

But i cannot understand that Greenpeace and similar organisations don't do anything???

This is total bullshit, whales are some of the smartest animals, comparing them to pigs is only what total idiots can do.

Feroe Islanders are not Retarded...They are Humans...They dont hide anything or ACT sensitive in front of the world...For that reason I respect them... I wish to reason with them as they wish to too...

Vegetarians - I appreciate them for forming all the Animal activist groups like RSPCA, PETA to protect cruelty to animals the world over. But let me give this to the Non vegetarians...these guys are SICK to the core!! They just can't see the whole point!
Again you....me...all the vegeterians should raise our voices even if they fall on deaf ears...because we must!

Feroe Islanders - Its a Tradition, Its Food, Its sport, Its not hunting, its equal to eating a chicken or a cow or a fish...only whales are killed not dolphins...Yesss all accepted.

Love you guys for standing up to all this criticsm from complete hypocrites...You all can be trusted unlike the non-vegetarians. But please understand...

dont get the kids involved
dont show the kids that killing the whales is fun
when an animal breathes its last...feel for it...it is a life..
ask yourself why do you want a part of this? Is your involvement completely neccessary?
does it do any good?
When you are about to kill a whale...just for the hell...let it go! YOU!! YES YOU!!! YOU saved a life!! WOW!! NOT everybody have a chance to do such...

Google also tells you that these people are using the info to access account details, site and names of western people. Be careful. I never heard of cyber terrorism before but they randomly pick a western country or place and exaggerate the truth to get a petition out and get your details

so very interesting indeed that this has moved to other sites and people are getting quite upset. Shows how dangerous technology can be... there is little truth here, the ocean was coloured in and there were not that many dolphins.. and I think it has been stopped years ago when Green peace came about... look at the cloths they are wearing... its not from today's times

The information is absolutely correct and there exists this annual hunting sport at the Faroe islands and the arguments as given by the people from that place related to the food chain seem plausible. But organizing a sport for slaughtering is still far from human values. Meat slaughtering is never done as a recreational sport where everyone is allowed to participate.

There was a petition against this idiocy - http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/end-whale-dolphin-slaughter-in-the-faroe-islands. It appears that they got twice the number of signatures that they expected. The site doesn't say, however, what happened with that petition.

Btw - "DPK" post (11/12/09 @ 08:40) - interesting that you flame the meat-eating community for 'hypocrisy' in the context of their condemnation of this Faroe islander brutality, while complimenting all vegetarians (for who-knows-what). I think the dolphins need all the support they can get - from carnivore AND herbivore humans - wouldn't you agree? Pls see the bigger picture and focus on getting relief to the real victims, instead of bashing meat-eating humans who are only here to try and help. Don't hijack this REAL issue into a sanctimonious superficial/rhetorical debate about the moral superiority of vegetarians over non-vegetarians.

Bad is Bad and Crime is Crime. Please do not commit inhumane things and support them on the name of food. Are we going to die, if we do not eat whale ? Since it is tasty, we will eat them. Your country takes pride in defending humanity, justice and fairness to all. The bloody scenes of killing these harmless whales, dolphins, (both babies and adults) by some of the Danish citizens and the whole country not opposing it makes me believe that you are all cowards and dishonor to the humanity. If you want to fight the whales, go fight them in the open seas without the arms and boats. All of you will be on level playing fields. Or consider, similar hacking of Danish Babies, Adults and teens to celebrate entering of Manhood... I am sure the whole nation of Denmark will take a note.

ok, some points to ponder.

> yes the images are disturbing. anyone who first glimpse on the crimson tide will surely be shocked and grossed out

> this is because the slaughter is done en masse. look, the whales only come once a year on the Faroe Islands. if our cattles come once a year and that is our oppurtunity to slaughter them for beef, i believe a similar scene will unfold

> for Faroese peeps, you will have to forgive our ignorance and naivete, but most people really tend to back out in the scene where humans are at their worst. especially when it comes to killing and innocence.

> the scene with the kids was disturbing, it invokes our "protective parent" instincts, can't you Faroese at least restrict children participation?

> for the hotbloods, please, do not judge what took place by what you saw..i live in a third world country, i've been to a slaughter house, i've killed my own chicken. nothing different except that these whales were killed en masse. try killing a thousand cows in a single day.

> there is a point indeed about killing whales. they are supposed to have near human intelligence, and they have many purposes today so you would have to understand that many many people are sensitive to this fact.

> humans dont want their dirty deed pointed out. and they will always have a cover. much like how the Nazis had a cover for their Holocaust. we must learn to distinguish the difference between just right and too much.

that's my 2cents.

hope my point is taken.,

A synopsis can be viewed at http//www.createspace,com/3345456

...mind you, the book is 230 pp and draws upon sources from a wide range of academic and scientific writers. It is written not for academics but for ordinary people, both religious and non-religious, who are confronted by man's inhumanity - both to animals and other humans. It helps to explain why we are like we are.

As they say its cultural, they perform those practices since the dawn early ages. its like eating dog meat( also being practice in mountain province) its hard to explain coz it has been with them since their forefathers were. Something cultural is hard to explain and stopped! Could we just expect them to stop and just butcher chickens instead? it takes an ironclad hand to let them know that these practices are no longer applicable in this day of age where all living creatures are on the brink of extinction. All creatures will cease to exist including us, the earth will be reborn, since we are all guilty of destroying not just creatures but the very planet that we live in. No one should be spared and by that time we shall all remember the horrors we inflicted... bottom line is were all going to be extinct unless we all and I mean all humans act upon it!

I have a solution for this stupidity...

It is called Faroese-Hunting.

First we trap Faroese people, put hooks through their flesh, insert knives in their bodies and HEY! This is definitely NOT BARBARIC. This is just a tradition that we wish to continue till their brain start functioning! No money involved. The bodies will not be sold. The flesh will be fed to sharks! Any sharks are welcome to join the party!

And oh! Don't worry about them getting extinct, we will kill just about a hundred of them per year. And besides, they are not yet in list of extinct animals!

Want to join Faroese Hunting, Anyone? Everyone's welcome!

Just making a point.

And I thought these barbaric and horrific practices were limited to primitive and isolated aboriginal tribes untouched by civilization. Maybe these people are not as civilized as we gave them credit for.

I am stunned, outraged, and horrified that this is going on in today's World. I see no compassion there, just barbaric cruelty. It is our duty to protect these animals from such utter waste and cruelty. Does anyone know where this stands now? Let's finish it, whatever it takes.

After seeing the circulated emails for the 1st time I was really disgusted at what I saw. I was totally enraged!! but then I did a little more research and things may what it seems to be.

As stated in the this URL : e http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whaling_in_the_Faroe_Islands

things are not always what they seem to be. So we need to understand this issue a lot better from the point of the Faroe people.

wow. what are we doing as a society? if there was a reason for this but there is not. We turn children into animals and than we wonder what we did wrong. We are all connected. We all survive this world because water, earth and sky are united with us inbetween. But now we have such problems as pollution killing or destorting our newborns, land drying up or being unable to use because of drought or oil spills ect and water which is undrinkable- because of US! Why are we doing this? This killing...it could be YOUR mother, YOUR father, YOUR child dying because of a senseless act. Remember that how you behave/act is what gets passed on to the next generation, whether your crime is right or wrong. Think about where you are being catagorized because of this. This is really sad. And the comment above mine on a dolphin killed your father? so sorry to hear but what goes around comes around NATURALLY not by force. If you look at it the way your seeing it than your father must have done something to deserve it but Im sure he didnt. We will never know. But we are here to love, not hate.

I agree with Canadian eh.Guys think a little. You eat chicken, pork and a lot of other things. they are kept in a cage or pen, however you like. we do these things too. (All vegetarians are now excluded from having to read the rest of this.)Look. i know the Faroe government only allows hooks, ropes, and poles for measuring. that explains the blood. Faroe is a island in the sea and they can't grow crops. It's too cold. If they shipped food, that would be very expensive. they live on MEAT guys. MEAT, just like the rest of us. The only meat they are allowed to get are differnt whales. and if they do it to prove that they are men, swat butterflies for all I care. but that is individual reason. If they don't get the meat, they will die.

This is so cruel! I agree eith every little thing. Kids should not engage in this kind of behavior. To be honest I thoght we as human beings were better than that. I don't understand how those people(noncivilized people) kill animals just for the hell of it. Let it had been them, then they would really have their feelings hurt. Why can't the world just come to peace? Im getting sick and tired of all of these sinful things going on in this world.

In order to come up with criticism about some issue, one have to assume this person is NOT doing the same thing of wich he is critcising .

Of course nobody can actualy stop this person from criticising anyway, but his words wil be shallow and not thrustworty, because his mouth is saying one thing and his actions the opposite.

I state that the majority of you who have written to this blog are doing the exact same things as the people of faroe islands, only more so in a bigger scale.

The majority of you eat meat!

The majority of you live in countrys where meat is not only for feeding it´s inhibitants, but is a multi billion industry= money !(not the case in faroe islands)

The majority of you live in countrys where animals get slaugterd every day and end up on YOUR plate.

The majority of you APPROVE the killing of (innocent) animals for food consumption!

The majority of you get SATISFACTION in eating a steak or burger at your local resturants!

The majority of you eat meat because it is TRADITION in your country

The majority of you have NEVER thought about given up animal-eating, though you migth have seen countless tv transmissions or internet clips of animal abuse on farms or slaugterhouses.

The majority of you live in countrys where non commersial privat SPORTHUNTING of different animals is common practice and is done for recreation and pure pleasure!!

Why in the name of Thor, Odin, Zeus, and sweet lord Jesus don´t you first take the consecuens of your strong convictions and quit all this animal-massmurder/eating/hunting/enjoing/ traditions of yours and your country, and THEN come forward at others??

Well why???

If you are willing to stop all your meat-consumption immediatly, I promise you faroe islanders will eat grass from then on.
